I like your idea of the cotton filling (rather than fiberfil). Then purchase a good quality muslin that is wide enough for your entire backing without any seams. I'm working on a similar find right now with the type of filling and backing I just mentioned. But, I'm hand quilting mine. It will take a lifetime, I'm sure! My quilt was dated 1930, so I wanted to keep it authentic. Aren't garage sales great?
